History of Faculty of Architecture
Our university was established in 1911 under the name of Conductor Mekteb-i Alisi, as a school linked to the Ministry of Public Works, based on the curriculum of the "Ecol de Conducteur" in Paris. In 1922, the school's name was changed to "Nafia Fen Mektebi," and the school's educational program was planned as 2.5 years in 1926 and 3 years in 1931. In 1942 and 1943, the department of electrical engineering and architecture started education in addition to the department of civil and mechanical engineering. The Architecture Branch was also established in the 1942-1943 academic year when the civil engineering department was restructured. As a result, nine architects graduated in the 1944-45 academic year within the scope of this educational structure. In the 1959-1960 academic year, switched two-stage educational program (the second school that implemented this program after METU), which includes master's education after undergraduate. Selected students started engineering and architecture master's education and were awarded a master's degree after completing the programs. Besides, the first evening education started here in the 1959-1960 academic year with the opening of İstanbul Evening Technical School. With law 1184 published on June 03, 1969, Istanbul Technical School was restructured under the name of Istanbul State Academy of Engineering and Architecture (IDMMA). In 1982, to solve the dilemma between the Academy and the University, the Istanbul State Academy of Engineering and Architecture was restructured as Yıldız University with departments of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Science and Social Sciences, the Vocational School and the four departments affiliated to Rectorate. In this period, the faculty of architecture was reorganized with the departments of architecture and city and regional planning and six sub-department. The name of the institution, which has continued high education in engineering and architecture since its establishment and contributed to the development of the country during the republic period with its graduates and academic staff, was changed to Yıldız Technical University with Law No 3837 on 3rd July 1992.
